The old glass veranda is going to try and double up as a greenhouse. But for that to happen all the old windows must be restored. Quite a job!

The sad moment came in January, this is our last picture of Malva. She was old and sick and it was such a cold winter. We are so grateful to have met this amazing good horse and that she spent her last time with us. Ciabatta and she had lived together for so many years and been unseperable. But Ciabatta accepted what was, and we tried as soon as possible to find her a new friend. This was in a time of terrible cold and snow, it wasn’t easy but at last we have been so lucky to find Triton. They are little and large, he’s not yet a year old but he has brought out a new side to Ciabatta. Opsal Gard, biomangfold og levende fortelling har grense til Romedal Almenning og Stange Almenning. Det har vært veldig positiv i forhold til biomangfold. Almenningen diskuterer nå å sette opp vindkraftpark der. Dette vil være ødeleggende i forhold til den fantastiske skog og naturen. Romedal Almenning har nå trukket seg fra prosjektet og vi er veldig takknemlige! Vi håper at Stange gjøre det samme og fortsetter å forvalte den verdifulle naturen for kommende generasjoner.

I’m sitting the dimly lit old farmhouse, warming in a blanket. I’m shutting my eyes and imagining those on the Farm this year, sitting with me in a large circle. Remembering Louis whose passion for plants recorded everything he saw here in its Latin name, remembering the selfless care and spontaneous fun of Kirstine, remembering the grace of Addy, the passion for insects of Arne, the rock-and-roll-jamming storytelling of Jacob, the calling voice of Siw, the pure feeling connection of Charlotte, the on-going golden and faithful support of the ‘Friends of Opsal farm’, the games and songs of Delaney, the meditations on an outside toilet of Peter, the ringing bell of remembering of Niklas, the joyful games of grand-children in the woods, the alert interest of the pupils of Tangen School, the Deep Time Walk of Martin, the amazing circle of storytellers and map-makers Malcolm, Kathinka, Daniel, the Forest garden lover Pernille, the French, the Belgians, the Germans, the Danish, the Koreans, the Dutch and all who devoted their time to be here, it goes on and on and on.
I’m imagining us sitting in a circle, full of gratitude for those moments those hours those muscles and those insights. Natural insulation? There was old moss in the cracks in the door. So we followed the (free) and according to one permaculturist we know, the best kind of insulation for this kind of crack. It may look like an angel and a devil were involved. Yes and no, thats Jacob who is far from the devil, and Kirstine who is, indeed an angel!

What about water and those horrible tracks the big machines had made? After the clear-cut we thought we needed to fill them. But no! Advent 19
So this year we did two areas of pretty much clear-cut. We marked every tree that was not spruce and the guys with the big machines were amazing at leaving them standing. It was nerve-wracking, were we ruining the forest? There was no rain for several months. But the rain came and wow! The ground which had looked completely dead under the spruce began to sprout at an incredible rate!! Saplings of many different species, and loads of other plants.

Jeg visste at Opsal var solgt, men at så mye er hent her er overraskende. Mor og far forpaktet Opsal, fra 1955 vil jeg tro. Sommerferien min på den tiden var å være med i slåttonna. Bratt og tungdreven var jordvegen og det var et slit i onnene. Utsikten var fabelaktig og det ble sagt ar en kunne se syv kirker i riktig klart vær.

Ice turns to feathers. Never seen such ice. Transformed into large feathers. A miracle to sustain our spirits in the temperatures of around -20 C. Taken in our favourite spot – the outside loo.

This farm is a mix of Rewilding and Reconnecting. Bast, Yin and Yang, Malva and Ciabatta and all the wild animals help us reconnect and be part of THE BIGGER IT. The real world in fact, in some ways so much more real than the human world.
